Welcome to the organiser’s pages for the 2010 Cotswold Way Relay

On these pages you should find all the information required to get the team in place for the event. Hopefully the participants can access the internet and equip themselves with the information for themselves, thus simplifying the responsibility of the Team Leaders.

THE EVENT

The Cotswold Way Relay is now in its 19th year, operated as 10 back-to-back races, starting each stage with a mass start at the expected arrival time of the 1st runner from the previous stage.

Running from Chipping Campden in the early morning, through to the arrival at Bath Abbey in the early evening, using the waymarked route of the Cotswold Way as our route, the relay is over 90% off-road, taking in many hills, woodlands, fields and tracks, all offering spectacular views of the countryside around (if ever a runner looked up from the path to take it in!).

We split the route up into 10 varied stages, varying in ascent and length, to offer a differing flavour for each runner in the team. There are no marshalls on the route, so route finding is all part of the spirit of the event. In recent years the Cotswold Way Authority has considerably improved the signage on route, as part of its upgrade to National Trail status, but there’s always one or two who speed past a sign to take time to appreciate some countryside off the main route. The race route follows the National Trail precisely, with the exception of the end of Stage 7 into Wotton-under-Edge, where we avoid the High St for safety reasons.

Many runners do a recce of their stage before the event, others fall in behind someone else. Most runners find that doing a recce through the beautiful Cotswolds in the company of other runners is all part of the great pleasure derived from this event. You will certainly observe more of the views during the recce than in the race.

Friday Night Curry Run 4th September

August 14, 2009

Indian MealFor all those interested we will meet at the rowing club at 6pm on Friday 4th September and probably run to the trig, although this is open for discussion. The run will be a social affair with all abilities welcome and nobody will get left behind. After showers etc we will make our way to “The Hereford Balti” in Widemarsh Street. The food is very reasonably priced and cooked to a high standard, it is not licensed so you will need to take your own booze, or soft drinks if you are a serious athlete. I will need to know numbers, so I will put a poster up at the club, where, if you can add your name by the previous week I would be grateful.

WYE VALLEY WOBBLERS

August 4, 2009

Wye Valley Wobblers

Wye Valley Wobblers

Wye Valley Runners are known to be versatile athletes ,always keen to take on a new or different sporting challenge.

So an idea for a friendly social bike ride started to be considered and Sue Sherwood set a date and planned a route for a ‘Practice Run’

10 enthusiastic club members met on a dry (thankfully for a change) Sunday morning and set off on an assortment of cycles.

A route via leafy lanes to Bredwardine was planned and everybody set off at a comfortably good pace with conversation and friendly banter  maintained at all times.

On a bend before Blakemere Chippy and Jan ( on tandem ) realised they had a technical problem i.e front pedals not connecting to chain or something like that.

A consultation committee of Jonathan  Mason and Dave Fletcher(cycling advisers with tools) and Jason (technical/mechanical expert) was formed. After a few attempts with various tools/rocks/lumps of wood they managed to get the problem fixed –well done and thank you boys !

Chippy and Jan got back on and continued the challenge. There had to be a stop  soon after at The Red Lion at Bredwardine for some liquid refreshment and recovery.

A steep uphill climb from the river towards Staunton then more quiet lanes and lots of lovely downhill where some amazing speeds were achieved.

There was good humour maintained all the way, and I think we all enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to Sue for organising and to all who took part. Photographs courtesy of Ralph Lloyd.

So perhaps another similar adventure will be planned-watch the notice board!

Triathlon next year??
