HEREFORDSHIRE  XC  LEAGUE - QUEENSWOOD  RACE

The 3rd race in the 2018/19 Herefordshire XC League series will be hosted by Wye Valley Runners and held at Queenswood Country Park on Sunday 6th January 2019.

The postcode for the venue is HR6 0PY. Queenswood Country Park is just off the A49 approx. 8 miles north of Hereford and 6 miles south of Leominster.

Car parking is now charged by the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and parking space is limited, so it makes sense to car share as much as possible.

Early arrivals will be directed to the overflow car park first and then, if that is full, the main public car park is available.

The start and finish are a short walk from the car parks. The course is hilly ( as you would expect!) and is a mixture of grass and stone trails. It is not suitable for spikes. Trail or fell shoes will be fine. There will be water at the finish and the on site café will be open serving other drinks and refreshments.  Course map here
Please be aware that this is a public park and respect other users.

This event also incorporates the Herefordshire XC County Championships for Senior, Veteran and Junior (aged 17-20) Men & Women. Eligibility for County qualification is : a) by birth in the county of Herefordshire or  b) by 9 months' continuous bona fide residence in Herefordshire immediately prior to the competition. Wye Valley Cub members will be entered and paid for by their club as we are the best club in town.

Midland Counties XC championships - Saturday 26th January 2019

The Midland Counties championships is being held at Leamington this year, so a reasonable travelling distance from Hereford. We didn't manage to get a full mens or womens team last year, although a number of WVRs ran and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. These are fantastic competitions to take part in and give you the chance to run against some of the best cross country runners in the country. Although the standard is high, no one should be concerned about finishing near the back, as there are always quite a few old codgers making up the numbers. If you want to take part, the club will pay the entrance fee and travelling expenses, so come on Wye Valley, lets try to get at least a mens team (6 to count) and a womens team (4 to count) and do the county proud. Names to me please (before Xmas)

Rotherwas XC details - Sunday 2nd December

Rotherwas Course:
The race is at the Rotherwas course, the same place as last year.  It starts at 11am.  All adults will do 3 laps of the 2.2 mile course, youth runners will do 2 laps of the 2.2 mile course.   The route uses footpaths and permitted routes around private farmland.  Please stick to the course and avoid running on the crops.  Please ask your spectators to keep themselves and their dogs off the crops. Map here
Water and biscuits will be available for runners after the race and professional first aid cover will be on site.

Directions and Parking:

Parking will be at the Balfour Beatty yard, Thorn Business Park, Holme Lacy Road,  HR2 6JT.   We would like to thank Balfour Beatty for their generosity in offering us the use of their car park once again.  Please do not park elsewhere on the industrial estate as vehicles, including large HGVs, will need access throughout Sunday.

The car park will be signed off Holme Lacy Road and we will have marshals assisting you until 10:30am (as they will be running)

The start of the course is a 5 minute walk from the car park.  There are toilets at the start of the course so please use these rather than those in the Balfour Beatty yard.

If you are coming by bike or by foot please follow the greenway bridge over the river from the city and the paths towards Rotherwas.  There will be space to secure your bike.

What a load of Bull

A very healthy number of club members met over Curry and Chips for the AGM on Friday 2nd Nov.

Martin highlighted a year filled with success - over 30 new members, finances in good shape, runners competing all over the UK, Ian and Phil trained up as UK Athletics qualified Leaders and a big fat cheque presented to Hope Support Services who were our charity for 2018.

Our race series goes from success to success and we look forward to welcoming a large crowd on New Year’s Day for the 10k.

Kim Handley was presented with the most improved woman runner of the year award, Ward Linney with the most improved man, Phil Butler picked up the Mighty Oak Award for his sterling work behind the scenes and Brent Lowson bagged the club slot for the London Marathon 2019. Well done and congrats to all of them.

Jan updated on another successful Cotswold Relay and encouraged everyone to get involved in the 2019 race.

There was much debate about the club logo - in the end the AGM voted strongly in favour of keeping the bull image with an improved design that the committee will finalise.

Further discussion was had about the pros and cons of club HQ - members needs are changing and our facilities need to reflect that in an affordable way. The committee will go back and do some more detailed work on options and come back to members soon.

Kelly and Ralph were thanked for their work on the committee as they now take a rest and Martin encouraged everyone to get involved, play their part and help make the club even more successful in the years ahead.

Herefordshire Winter Cross Country series

The club competes in 2 cross country series - winter and summer. This involves all of the running clubs in Herefordshire and a few from around the borders. They are free to enter for individuals and there are series trophies and prizes for teams and individuals within the usual categories. The format of the 2 series is slightly different - the rules for the winter series are here. Distances are usually between 5 and 6 miles

The dates and races are as follows:

WINTER LEAGUE 18/19

14th October Fforest Fields Builth & District Running Club

11th November Croft Castle Croft Ambrey

2nd December Rotherwas Hereford Tri- Club

6th January Queenswood tbc Wye Valley Runners

3rd February tbc Presteigne Presteigne Pacers & Hay Hotfooters

Although the team race is always competitive, these events are open to club runners of all abilities, so if you haven’t given cross country a go, do come along. You will need to ask Jan Edwards for a number which is used for the series.

We will need marshals and helpers for the January event which the club hosts.

Yoga sessions

We have now agreed with Rose that the yoga sessions will continue on a Tuesday 6.15 - 7.15 at the Rowing Club. WVR members will pay a reduced rate of £5 per session. This should be paid directly to Rose. Anyone that attends for the first time should produce their WVR membership card. If you haven't got one, please contact Dave Sherwood who will be able to supply you with one as long as you are a fully paid up member.

Strength and Conditioning workshop - 6.30 Thursday 13th September at the Rowing Club

Following the success of the yoga sessions, I have asked Nick Summerfield, a Physiotherapist with expertise in sports injuries, to conduct a session on injury prevention. This should complement the yoga and be of benefit to many of our members. Again, we need to see how this goes before we decide frequency and cost to members etc. Can you let me know if you will be attending, so that Nick has an idea of numbers?

martinflowers@sky.com

Also a reminder that the yoga sessions will resume on Tuesday 11th at 6.15 p.m. in the Rowing Club. There will then be a 2 week break, as Rose is on holiday. So the next session after that will be October 2nd, when we should have sorted out a permanent time, place and cost to members.
