Wot no licence?

It is becoming the norm now for UK Athletic registered races to ask for your licence number. If you are a paid up member you will eventually get a licence from UKA. It has your unique number on it. If you lose it, forget it or eat it you can retrieve it using this link: http://livemyathletics.uka.org.uk/LicenceCheck/

Thanks to Pete Flyn for the tip

Wye Valley Runners overseas trip 2016

It’s time to decide where our next adventure will be. From informal discussions, Valencia seems to be a distinct possibility (Stevens 26 marathons in alphabetical order having been long abandoned!) The date has now been confirmed as November 20th and there is a full marathon and a 10k. It should still be pretty warm in November and flights are just starting to be advertised and look relatively cheap. An initial trawl of hotels suggests that we should be able to get good value accommodation as well, but we probably need to decide on Valencia and get booked, because it is a big race and hotels will get booked up. Also the prices for the races increase the nearer you get to the race date.

For the uninitiated, this is either an opportunity to race abroad on a PB course, or a good social event with a fun run thrown in, depending on your outlook. If you haven’t been on a Wye Valley overseas trip before, you will certainly enjoy yourselves.

The web site address, which is in badly translated English, is here:

http://www.valenciaciudaddelrunning.com/en/marathon/marathon10k/

If you’re interested, can you let Steven or myself know and I can then do a bit more investigation of flights/ hotels etc.

If you go down to the woods today.....

Summer approaches which means only one thing - Friday night wood runs return.

We begin the season with a practice of the Gords 6 run - a treat to start things off. Meet at the recreation ground in Fownhope Friday 1st April at 6.15. Turn right just before the church and right into the sports field after 80 metres.

Then from Friday 8th April we meet every week at the top car park in Haugh Woods ready to run at 6.15. We run for about an hour on various off road routes mostly around the Hope Valley. It's a relaxed and sociable start to the weekend. If you haven't tried it before why not give it a try. Bring some off road shoes .....

Cotswold Relay meeting and news

Cotswold Way Relay meeting on Monday 4th April at 7.30 pm in Rowing Club.
We have entered 3 teams..men,ladies and mixed with 10 runners each team.
We aim to put in the best and most competitive teams we can so we need to allocate the strongest runners to the hardest stages.
Please let us know if you have any particular preferences but please bear in mind that the priority is to put out the best teams that we can!
At the meeting we will ask for a non returnable charge of £10 per runner and 100% commitment.
Obviously we will allow for dropout for injury or illness and we need some reserve runners to cover for this.
Paul Bouston Jan Edwards and Jeremy Jehan are coordinating teams
More information on Cotswold Way Relay website. Please look at the details before the meeting to prepare yourselves!

XC League Final Category Positions

Click here for a list of the final positions in each category for the XC series.

The figures are based on the best 4 positions, within that particular category, in the 5 races.

Where the points total is equal, it is then based on the best 3 positions.

P.S. A pair of navy blue zip-legged Adidas tracksuit bottoms was left at the British Legion Club in Presteigne on Sunday. They are now in Mike Blenkinsops possession. Please contact him if you are walking around half naked.

Muddy Woody 6 - final briefing!

Muddy Woody 6 :  Pre-race information

Wye Valley Runners look forward to seeing you on Sunday 14th February and hope the following information will be useful to you :

         Please note that all entries are non-transferrable. This means that if for any reason you are not able to take part you will not be able to transfer your number to another runner

         To get to the race follow the signs from the village of Mordiford. If using satnav the postcode HR1 4QX should get you to the registration area.

         Please allow plenty of time to get to the race and park as you may need to leave your car some distance from the start. Please park as directed by the marshals along the forest tracks and follow the arrows and signs and observe the one-way system. Please note that after the race the forest gates will be locked at 2.00 PM. Please do not park on Broadmoor Common as the ground is saturated and you are likely to become stuck as well as damaging the grass.

         You will need to collect your race number from the registration area. Numbers will be distributed alphabetically according to surname, so please go to the appropriate table according to your name.

         There will be a covered storage area for you to leave any bags and a box will be available at the registration / refreshments area to deposit car keys. Please note that any items are left at your own risk and the organisers cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage.

         This year’s course has several changes to recent years, so please pay attention to the arrows, marker tape and marshals.

         If for any reason you need to pull out during the race then please ensure that you inform a marshal and let them know your race number. This is important in order that we can account for everyone out on the course.

Most important : Enjoy your run and try to manage a smile when you cross the finish line !

Presteigne Cross Country - Sunday 7th Feb

PRESTEIGNE CROSS COUNTRY

07th February 2016

As the forestry is open to the public we kindly request runners ‘car share’ as much as possible and don’t park in the forestry car park (If the NRW who maintain the forestry get too many complaints regarding the race, we may not be able to hold the race in the future) there is plenty of space for parking on the approach road and by the leisure Centre.

The ladies race will start @ 10:45 from the forestry car park and follow the same route as last year (approximately 4.25 miles).

The men’s race will start @ 11:00 from the forestry car park, but due to forestry work, the route will follow the course last used in 2014 (approximately 7.25 miles).

Both routes have a good mix of forestry, tracks, climbs, descents, mud (not as much as Monkall Farm) and water features (especially for Hereford Couriers & Maldwyn Harriers).

As this is a working forest, forestry work may cause us to change the routes at short notice.

Shower facilities are available at the leisure Centre (clean shoes please) but they may charge for this.

We are planning a recce of the men’s route on Sunday the 31/01/2016, if any members from any club (male or female) are interested please let me know by Thursday the 28/01/2016.

The post-race refreshments & presentation will be held at the Royal British Legion Club (clean shoes & clothing please) from 12:30pm, there is plenty of parking available in the car park (£1.30 up to 2 hours) and on the street (free).

More detail of the courses and the location of the Royal British Legion Club can be found by clicking the link below and then clicking on the ‘Presteigne XC’ event on the calendar.

Cotswold Relay 2016

Some  information about the Cotswold Relay for anyone interested in this years event.
It takes place on the last Saturday in June.
It's a 100 mile staged relay starting at Chipping Camden and follows the Cotswold Way National Trail finishing at Bath Abbey.Mainly off road, lots of hills, wonderful scenery and fantastic views! There are no marshalls but you follow the runner in front or look out for the cotswold way markers! 10 runners in each team. The 10 stages start at set times and the finish lines of each stage are timed by race officials.
Paul Bouston and Jan Edwards will be coordinating the Wye Valley entries..we are confident we will have enough interest to enter 3 teams mens ladies and mixed . There is a lot of organisation involved and we all need to make transport arrangements to get to start points and pick up others at their finish points! Its a great help if there are some extra supporters to help with transport and its great to follow the race if you get the chance before or after completing your stage .There is an option for a night out in Bath and stopover in the city centre..highly recommended!
Many runners who have competed before have preferences for their stages and we try to give them priority when choosing stages. We will be having meetings to discuss and then arrange teams and allocate runners to stages. Then the transport arrangements can begin!
Some new runners to the event may want to do a reccie of their stage before the event.
More details are on the Cotwold Way Relay site here. Team Bath AC organise the event.
Its a brilliant day.. Wye Valley have had many years Cotswold relay experience and this year will be another great team event.

Super Ten 2016 - a ten step guide

For a few years now we have been  running a summer club championship. For new members and old members with fading memories here's how it works:

  1. The much admired and good looking committee choose a selection of races over the summer period and invite club members to race as many as they can. This year we have chosen 19. There is still time to influence the chosen races if you bribe committee members with beer.
  2. Club members get points for their position in the race. So first women home from WVR gets 50 points, second 49 and so on - everyone gets a point. Same for the men.
  3. To qualify for the championship you must complete a minimum of 10 races - any 10 from 19 .
  4. It doesn't matter which ones you race - as long as you have a go.
  5. It also doesn't matter whether you finish front, back or middle of pack - you can compete against club mates of similar ability as the season develops.
  6. Its free to enter
  7. There is no paperwork or entry system - just turn up and run.
  8. One plea - when entering race always use the same name(i.e David consistently - not Dave one race, David another and DJ another) - otherwise it makes Steven's life a complete misery trying to track down who has finished where. I know making Steve's life a misery is attractive to many - but in this case please do what you can to help
  9. The 19 chosen races are:Gords 6 / Hereford Half / Wye Val 10km / Couriers 5km race 1 / Darrens Dash / Magic Roundabout / Malvern Joggers 10km / Breinton 10M / Crocodile 8 / Abbeydore XC / Kinnersley XC / Westhope XC / Shobdon XC / Man v Horse / Big Dipper 10km / 1 mile track / Offa’s Dyke / Fan Y Big / Hereford Duathlon.
  10. If you have any questions just ask a cleverly disguised committee member. They are the ones in the running gear.
