Sunday 17 February 2019 11.00 start

Wye Valley Runners look forward to seeing you on Sunday and hope the following information will be useful to you :

·         Please note that we can no longer accept any transfers of race numbers and there will not be any additional places available on the day for anyone who does not already have an allocated place in their own name.

·         To get to the race follow the signs to Woollhope from the Moon Pub in Mordiford. If using satnav the postcode HR1 4QX should get you to the registration area.

·         Please allow plenty of time to get to the race and park as you may need to leave your car some distance from the start. Please park as directed by the marshals along the forest tracks, follow the arrows and signs and observe the one-way system. Please note that after the race the forest gates will be locked at 1.30 PM. Please do not park on Broadmoor Common as the ground is saturated and you are likely to damage the grass and become stuck.

·         You will need to collect your race number from the registration area. Numbers will be distributed alphabetically according to surname, so please go to the appropriate table according to your name. Please pin your number on the front of your shirt and ensure that the barcode is visible as this will be scanned on the finish line to record your place.

·         There will be a somewhere for you to leave any bags and a box will be available at the registration / refreshments area to deposit car keys. Please note that all items are left at your own risk and the organisers cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage.

·         The course will be marked by arrows and marker tape and marshals will be positioned at regular intervals to keep you on track and offer encouragement.

* Please check the weather forecast and dress appropriately, particularly if cold or wet conditions are expected.

* For your safety, please be aware that much of the course is on rough, slippery or uneven ground with exposed tree roots and loose stones.

·         If for any reason you need to pull out during the race then please ensure that you inform a marshal and let them know your race number. This is important in order that we can account for everyone out on the course.

* Please check the Wye Valley Runners website / Facebook for any last minute updates

Most important : Enjoy your run and try to manage a smile when you cross the finish line !

Runners Etiquette:
Every precaution has been taken to ensure this event is as safe as possible, however due to the nature of ‘off road’ running some incidents may occur. Safety is always the responsibility of the individual. No runner should act in a way that puts themselves or others in danger. Any runner found acting in a dangerous manner will be disqualified. As an entrant in this event, you accept a care of duty to yourself and other runners. If you find another runner in difficulty is your responsibility to offer assistance. This may be helping them walk to the nearest Marshal or to run onto the next Marshal and inform them of the incident. If you are unable to finish the race for any reason, it is your responsibility to contact the nearest Marshal and inform them of your withdrawal and also report to the Race officials at the finish area. You must listen to and obey instruction given by Race Officials and Marshals at any time during the event, failure to do so will result in disqualification. Although this is a competitive event and everyone wants to win, give way to faster runners. Any runner found intentionally slowing down other runners will be disqualified. Leave no sign that you were ever here! If you have gels or a drink, please take the empties home with you, if a water station is provided please use the nearby bin. The marshals are here for your safety, not to clear up your mess. All the event staff, Marshals, time keepers & first aiders are volunteers, so thank them because without them you wouldn’t be here.

Showers: Available at the Leisure Centre (there is a £2.00 Charge payable at the Leisure Centre) Note: no dirty shoes inside the centre please

cwr2019.jpg

This years Cotswold Way Relay has just been confirmed as Saturday 29th June 2019. Full details here

This year the lovely hosts Bath AC are very organised and we need to confirm our interest in the next few weeks There is no guarantee of a place - for now we need to know who is available and we will then choose our intrepid , speedy and brave teams. We hope to enter 3 teams. Jan will try and put you in a leg you prefer but please be patient as it’s complicated and you may not get first choice! Bribery sometimes helps.

There is a chance to get together at the end of the day, share stories of your pain, have a beer and get to know your club mates.

There will be a meeting at a later date to sort out plans and take your money. Be there or be square

Please let Jan Edwards know as soon as you can if you are interested - there will be a £10 fee per a member but this is heavily subsidised by the club. It’s one of the highlights of the Wye Valley Year - join us if you can

The Cotswold Way Relay is now in its 27th year, operated as 10 back-to-back races, starting each stage with a mass start at the expected arrival time of the 1st runner from the previous stage.

Running from Chipping Campden in the early morning, through to the arrival at Bath Abbey in the early evening, using the waymarked route of the Cotswold Way as our route, the relay is over 90% off-road, taking in many hills, woodlands, fields and tracks, all offering spectacular views of the countryside around (if ever a runner looked up from the path to take it in!).

This weeks event was hosted by Wye Valley Runners, with our own Tony Champken as Race Director, supported by an army of Wye Valley Runners as marshals, pacers and helpers.

New Year's Day 10k race report

women.jpg

Jones takes the crown in Wye Valley New Year Challenge.

Hereford man Charlie Jones running for Cheltenham and County Harriers took first place in the annual Wye Valley Runners New Year’s Day 10k race around the challenging course on the country lanes of Breinton. Jones held off former club mate Barry Reynolds of Hereford Couriers to finish in style in a time of 34 minutes 10 seconds. Reynolds time of 34.27 was just ahead of Brecon athlete Brychan Price Davies who charged home on the finishing straight clocking a time of 34.50.

Brecon were well represented with Donna Morris from the Powys based club just heading off improving Jodie Newell of Wye Valley Runners to finish in a time of 41.58. Newell had work to do with Naomi Prosser from rival club Hereford Couriers breathing down her neck right up to the final straight.

222 runners took part in the event in almost perfect conditions with some really outstanding performances from many of the experienced veteran runners. Jon Herod from Vegan Runners took the male vet 40 prize in a fast 37.31, Jon Newey from BlackPear Joggers the male 45 prize in an even faster time of 36.39 and visiting athlete Donato Esposito of Bournville Harriers dominating  the male vet 55 category with a very fast time of 38.32. Not to be outdone, the lady veteran runners showed some great form: Wye Valley Runner Gillian Miskimmin clocking 44.07 as first vet 35,  Joanna Eddy at 43.45 proved her point in the vet 40 category and Liz Bower from Worcester AC smashed the vet 65 category recording a time of 48.40.

Earlier on new year's morning 169 runners completed the 5k park run on the racecourse but Peter Flynn of Wye Valley Runners decided to do both as part of his London Marathon training

Barry Reynolds, Bobby Pritchard and Liam Tosh won a clear victory to pick up the men’s team prize with Wye Runners clinching the women’s prize with Joide Newell, Gillian Miskimmin and Juiet Moxon .

Martin Flowers chair of Wye Valley Runners thanked all of the runners and volunteers who made the day a great success – he encouraged people to take the first step and join their local club and invited everyone to come along to the clubs next event – the off road Muddy Woody 6 mile Challenge on Sunday Feb 17th at Haugh Woods. There are still a few places left for this race - but selling fast.
